Natural Progesterone to Reduce Preterm Birth

Births occurring before the 37th week of pregnancy are considered preterm. A new study indicates that natural progesterone, used vaginally as a gel or tablet, can reduce the risk of preterm birth, low birthweight, respiratory distress syndrome, neonatal complications, and infant death in pregnant women with a shortened cervix. In preparation for birth, the cervix (lower part of the uterus) thins and shortens. In some women, the cervix shortens prematurely, and this is a significant predictor of preterm birth, which is the leading cause of death in children younger than 5. The latest report from the March of Dimes puts the national preterm birth rate at 9.8 percent. Ask our compounding pharmacist how we can help.
