Human Drugs May be Poisonous to Animals

Nearly 50% of all pet poisonings involve human drugs. Pets metabolize medications very differently from people. Even seemingly benign over-the-counter or herbal medications may cause serious poisoning in pets. Human medications that can cause serious harm to pets include NSAIDs like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, beta-blockers, antidepressants, ADD/ADHD medications, benzodiazepines and sleep aids. Animals can also be sensitive to inactive ingredients like xylitol that are commonly used in manufactured drugs. Our compounding pharmacy can prepare medications without problem-causing ingredients. Because we can customize medications, your veterinarian can prescribe a medicated treat, transdermal gel, or flavored liquid concentrate to make it easy to take care of your furry or feathered friends.
