Phenobarbital for Epilepsy in Cats: Transdermal Administration

Phenobarbital (PB) is the most commonly used antiepileptic drug. Chronic oral dosing can be challenging for cat owners, leading to poor compliance. A study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine showed that therapeutic serum PB concentrations can be achieved in cats following chronic transdermal administration of PB in a base known as Pluronic Lecithin Organogel (PLO) at the proper dosage every 12 hours.

Transdermal administration may be an alternative for cats that are difficult to medicate orally. Ask our compounding pharmacist for more information.
