Sleep Disruption and Fibromyalgia

Disrupted sleep is widely thought to be one of the causes of fibromyalgia. Based on that assumption, some practitioners believe that treatments that improve sleep quality would reduce symptoms experienced by patients with fibromyalgia. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at 17 sites in the United States included 205 participants. Researchers found that a sublingual tablet containing a muscle relaxant known to cause drowsiness, taken at bedtime for 12 weeks, improved sleep and reduced pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia.
