Probiotics Reduce Seasonal Allergy Symptoms

A recent double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study from the University of Florida suggests that probiotics can help improve quality of life in individuals with seasonal allergies. “Rhinoconjunctivitis”, a combination of symptoms affecting the nose and eyes, occurs when immune system responds to an allergen by releasing histamine and chemical mediators.  Symptoms of allergic rhinitis include itchy nose, sneezing, watery mucus and usually nasal congestion or blockage, while symptoms of conjunctivitis are itching/burning eyes, tearing and redness.  A probiotic containing a combination of certain strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium can help with symptoms of mild to moderate seasonal allergies. Ask our pharmacist which probiotic formulation would be best for you.
