Human Drugs May be Poisonous to Animals

Nearly 50% of all pet poisonings involve human drugs. Pets metabolize medications very differently from people. Even seemingly benign over-the-counter or herbal medications may cause serious poisoning in pets. Human medications that can cause serious harm to pets include NSAIDs like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, beta-blockers, antidepressants, ADD/ADHD medications (e.g. Adderall®, Ritalin®), benzodiazepines and sleep aids (e.g. Xanax®, Klonopin®, Ambien®, Lunesta®). Animals can also be sensitive to inactive ingredients like xylitol that are commonly used in manufactured drugs. Our compounding pharmacy can prepare medications without problem-causing ingredients. Because we can customize medications, your veterinarian can prescribe a medicated treat, transdermal gel, or flavored liquid concentrate to make it easy to take care of your furry or feathered friends.
