Abnormal Hair Growth in Women

An updated clinical guideline from the Endocrine Society recommends all women with abnormal or excessive hair growth (hirsutism) who are premenopausal should be tested for PCOS and other health issues. Abnormal hair growth (especially facial) or hair loss on the head, are the most common and among the most distressing symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which affects 5-10 percent of women.  "Excess facial or body hair is not only distressing to women, it is often a symptom of an underlying medical problem," said lead author Kathryn A. Martin, MD, from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Women need not endure these problems as they can be treated; however, it is important to find the cause of hirsutism so that it can be treated properly.
