Topical Metformin for Hyperpigmentation

There are numerous causes of hyperpigmentation, such as inflammation, hormone imbalance, cosmetics, drug side effects, and UV radiation in addition to conditions such as Addison’s disease and Wilson’s disease. These pigmentation disorders have traditionally been relatively difficult treat, and currently used depigmentation products often have little effect and sometimes severe side effects. A medication used to treat diabetes (metformin) has improved discoloration as a result of reducing blood sugar levels. Only a topical form of metformin (not the oral form) has resulted in improvement of hyperpigmentation disorders. Several reports have also demonstrated the inhibitory effect of metformin on cancers including melanoma. Our compounding pharmacist can work with your doctor to prepare topical medications that are not commercially available.
