Tearing? It Could be Dry Eyes!

Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of your eyes and for providing clear vision. People with dry eyes either don't produce enough tears or their tears are of poor quality which can cause increased watering of the eyes, so people think they have too many tears and don’t realize their eye surface is actually dry. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, more commonly called “dry eye syndrome” (DES), is the most frequently encountered condition. Diabetes mellitus is one of the leading causes of DES. Dry eye is also a symptom of Sjogren's syndrome, and can be a side effect of some drugs. If you are experiencing a scratchy feeling, eye irritation, or problems with your vision, talk to your doctor to make sure your eyes are lubricated to avoid damage that can lead to scarring and infection of your eye.
