Estrogen Therapy – When and Why?

Not all women who are postmenopausal need to receive estrogen therapy. However, estrogen deprivation can be detrimental to health, so each woman should be tested to see if her hormone levels are normal, and if levels are low, she should be treated. Estrogen does not just have a role in sexual function, but has many lesser known functions, such as stimulating the production of choline acetyltransferase which can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, decreasing high blood pressure, helping to maintain memory and improving reasoning, retaining the water content and collagen in skin, improving insulin sensitivity, maintaining muscle, and improving sleep. Pamela W. Smith, MD has published several interesting books on this topic. We will work with women and their physicians to customize therapies to meet each woman’s specific needs while minimizing side effects.
