Reducing the Risk of Cataracts

Cataracts are a leading cause of blindness. Currently, the only treatment for cataracts is surgical removal of the cloudy lens, which typically is replaced with an intraocular lens. While the exact cause of cataracts is unknown, experts believe that oxidative stress damages enzymes and proteins in the eye's natural lens, which causes the lens to become cloudy. Antioxidant vitamins and phytochemicals found in fruits and vegetables such as vitamins A, C and E, lutein and zeaxanthin, and consumption of fish oils or fish which is high in omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of cataracts or their progression. For healthy eyes, drink plenty of water, cut back on alcohol, avoid smoking, wear wide brimmed hats and sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB rays, keep blood sugar in control, and have regular eye exams.
