Convalescent Plasma Therapy

As of this writing (April 10, 2020), no specific treatments for COVID-19 have been shown to be safe and effective.  Over the past two decades, Convalescent Plasma (CP) therapy has been used for the treatment of SARS, MERS, and 2009 H1N1 pandemic with satisfactory efficacy and safety. CP therapy involves donation of plasma (similar to giving blood) by a person who was COVID-19 positive and has had no symptoms for over 14 days. The plasma contains antibodies that can help a severely ill, hospitalized patient fight the disease. One small study of 10 severe adult cases showed that one dose of CP was well tolerated. All patients also received an antiviral (such as remdesivir, arbidol, or ribavirin) and six patients received an intravenous corticosteroid. Clinical symptoms rapidly improved within 3 days. Virus disappeared from the blood within 7 days. CP holds promise but more research is needed.
