Maternal Sugar Consumption Increases Risk of Asthma in Children

Researchers from Queen Mary University of London looked at the free sugar consumption during pregnancy of about 9,000 mothers and how it influenced their children. Researchers theorized that a high maternal intake of fructose caused a persistent allergic inflammatory response in the lungs of the developing fetus. When comparing the 20% of moms who consumed the least sugar with the 20% who consumed the most sugar, cases of asthma, wheezing, hay fever, eczema, and atopy (allergies) in their children increased by 38% at ages 7-9 years. Between 1970 and 2000, the worldwide trend showed a 25% increase in the per capita consumption of all refined sugars. Current international dietary guidelines advise people to reduce their consumption of sugar, and more particularly free sugars, which include sugars (monosaccharides and disaccharides) added to foods or drinks by the manufacturer, cook or consumer; and sugars naturally present in honey, syrups and unsweetened fruit juices.
