Can Mammograms Help with Heart Health?

Besides revealing masses that may be tumors, digital mammography can reveal buildup of calcium in the arteries in the breast. The latest research is showing a possible link between calcium buildup in breast tissue and coronary artery calcification which is a risk of cardiovascular disease. Women with calcium buildup in the breast arteries had 2.2 times the odds of having or developing heart failure. Mammograms have helped save lives by screening for breast cancer and now can possibly help fight heart disease, the number one cause of death among U.S. women, without additional cost or radiation exposure.
