Can Mammograms Help Fight Heart Disease?

Mammograms have helped save lives by screening for breast cancer and now may possibly help fight heart disease in women, without additional cost or radiation exposure. Besides revealing masses that may be tumors, digital mammography can reveal buildup of calcium in the arteries in the breast called breast arterial calcification, or BAC. Early studies have found BAC's presence may be a sign of an elevated risk for heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems. Researchers are excited about the potential of leveraging a widely used test to fight heart disease, the #1 cause of death among U.S. women.
